News from CCHCC

December 13, 2022

Dear friends,

Champaign County Health Care Consumers would like to share some news with you – some of it sad, some of it good. Please stay tuned in the coming days for more on each topic.

Senator Scott Bennett’s sudden and unexpected death. By now you have likely heard the very sad news of Senator Bennett’s tragic death. Senator Bennett was beloved by so many in our community, including CCHCC. He was an excellent State Senator who worked with CCHCC on several different issues, including 5th & Hill, and the Mahomet Aquifer. And he was a genuinely wonderful person who was kind, compassionate, pragmatic, and effective, and fun. In the coming days, CCHCC will write a tribute to Sen. Bennett. We, like so many, are utterly heartbroken.

Good news about the ACA’s Marketplace for health insurance – more people eligible for subsidies! We are currently in the Open Enrollment period for purchasing health insurance through the Affordable Care Act’s Marketplace. The good news this year is that the notorious “family glitch” has been fixed, so now, people who have the option of employer-based health insurance coverage in their family can now apply for financial assistance (subsidies) in the Marketplace! Prior to this year, people who had the option of employer-based coverage in their family (for example, as a result of a spouse’s coverage) were prohibited from getting subsidies in the Marketplace, even if their employer-based coverage was unaffordable. This important change means that more people can shop for health insurance in the Marketplace and potentially qualify for subsidies to make that coverage more affordable!

If you need help applying for Marketplace health insurance during this Open Enrollment period, please contact CCHCC by calling 217-352-6533 or sending an email to cchcc@cchcc-il.org [4] – please be specific about what you need help with so that we can direct your messages accordingly.

Big news about a big project – a Tiny Homes Village for chronically homeless and/or medically fragile homeless individuals! CCHCC is partnering with Carle and UIUC in order to build and operate a tiny homes village for homeless individuals! This project is in its infancy, but moving forward steadily. We hope to engage even more partners into this amazing project. You can read some news coverage about it here. [5]

Stay tuned to CCHCC emails and Facebook for more information on all of these topics, and more.
