In 1995, CCHCC organized the Friends of Public Health, a county-wide coalition oforganizations and individuals who worked to pass a referendum in November 1996 to create a county-wide public health department. The coalition works to bring the voice and priorities of county residents to public health policy — and to expand public health services. The coalition’s work has resulted in the creation of a tuberculosis testing and treatment program, health check clinics throughout the county, home nurse visits for rural residents, and the Child Dental Access Program which provides free dental care for low-income county children. CCHCC’s current public health work is focused on supporting efforts to improve and expand public health services in Champaign County.
